PRP Information and FAQs

What is PRP?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a safe, non-surgical procedure that is used to help restore hair counts and density in those with thinning or balding scalps. PRP is quite literally a high concentration of platelets surrounded in its own plasma. This platelet rich plasma is packed with fundamental growth factors that help to stimulate the skin and hair follicles.

What is the procedure like?

A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm comfortably in our office and spun down in a specialized centrifuge that separates the platelets from the other components of the blood. Once the PRP is isolated, it is then injected into your scalp and helps to stimulate hair follicles due to the high concentration of natural growth factors. Because your PRP is isolated from your own blood (autologous PRP), it is very safe and very effective.

The injections are quick and easy. A small needle is used to place the PRP directly into the scalp through a series of small injections that feel like a pinch. A device is used to blow very cold air on your scalp while the injections are being performed to keep you comfortable. The entire procedure takes about 5 minutes once the PRP has been isolated. After the procedure, the scalp can feel a bit “full” because of the amount of PRP injected, but this sensation improves quickly. Typically, we expect you to be able to return to your normal activities without any downtime (a complete handout of your post procedure instructions and expectations will be given to you before your procedure).

How many treatments do you need?

Based on the literature, we recommend a series of 3 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart. After completion of this series, we recommend another session around month 6 for the best possible outcome. Many patients then come back for 1-2 maintenance sessions yearly.
